Love and Abolition is a completion of Jane Austen’s unfinished novel The Brothers. The novel contains Austen’s only known Black character, and in this adaptation, playwright Phanésia Pharel (Playwriting Fellow 2025-2027, Theater Studies), reimagines Austen’s world through a contemporary lens.

Blending romance, social critique, and historical reckoning, the play asks a timely and provocative question: What does it truly mean to be an abolitionist?
